Understanding binge eating, emotional eating, body image & habit formation
Our approach at Wessex Private GP is compassionate weight management as we explain why psychological support matters.
Binge Eating
What it is: Eating a large amount of food in a short time with a sense of loss of control.
Why it matters: It’s not just overeating — it’s a recognised condition with effective treatments.
Validated Treatments:
- CBT-E (Enhanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
- Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
- Medications: SSRIs (e.g. fluoxetine), lisdexamfetamine (in adults)
Emotional Eating
What it is: Eating in response to emotions like stress or sadness, not hunger.
Why it matters: It can create a cycle of guilt and distress. Learning new coping skills helps.
Validated Treatments:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills for emotion regulation
- Mindfulness-Based Eating Awareness Training (MB-EAT)
Body Image
What it is: How you see and feel about your body.
Why it matters: Negative body image can affect daily life. Respect and acceptance are key.
Validated Treatments:
- CBT-E body image modules
- Compassion-Focused Therapy
- Mirror exposure and body acceptance work
Habit Formation
What it is: Repeated behaviours that become automatic.
Why it matters: Small, consistent changes can build healthier habits over time.
Validated Treatments:
- Behavioural weight management programmes
- Habit-based interventions
- Implementation intentions (‘if–then’ planning)
The emphasis is on shifting the focus away from blame and toward practical, compassionate tools that make weight management more achievable and sustainable.
How Weight-Loss Medications Can Help
Several medications are now available to support weight management, including GLP-1 receptor agonists (e.g. semaglutide/Wegovy, tirzepatide/Mounjaro), orlistat/xenical, and in some cases metformin (prediabetes, PCOS). These work in different ways.
The key point is that medication is most effective when combined with psychological and behavioural support, rather than used alone.
