Introducing the Stockholm3 Test: a smarter way to check your prostate health
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, and early detection can make a life‑changing difference. Widespread prostate cancer screening is not available on the NHS, although NHS GPs can offer the PSA blood test to those who are concerned or have symptoms.
The PSA test is useful when it comes back very high or very low, indicating a high or low risk of cancer respectively, but less useful when the result is in between. In these situations it can sometimes miss aggressive cancers or lead to unnecessary investigations or even treatment.
But there is another way. At Wessex Private GP, we’re pleased to offer the Stockholm3 test – an advanced blood test that provides a clearer, more reliable picture of your prostate cancer risk.
What is the Stockholm3 Test?
Stockholm3 is an innovative blood test for men aged 45–74 and no previous prostate cancer diagnosis.
It works by combining:
- PSA plus three additional protein markers
- A panel of genetic markers (SNPs)
- Clinical factors, including age and family history
Why is Stockholm3 better than PSA alone?
- Detects more aggressive cancers – earlier
Many aggressive prostate cancers do not raise PSA levels significantly, especially at early stages. - Reduces unnecessary biopsies and MRIs
Stockholm3 can reduce unnecessary biopsies by up to 50%. - Clear, personalised recommendations
Your report includes your individual risk score and advice on next steps. - Backed by strong scientific evidence
Validated in studies involving over 90,000 men and used clinically in Sweden & Norway since 2017.
Experts briefing the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recognised the value of the Stockholm 3 test stating that:
‘The evidence suggests that Stockholm3 is more effective at predicting risk of prostate cancer than PSA testing alone for people aged 45 to 74.’
Who should consider the Stockholm3 Test?
If you’re interested, you can have the test with us even if you don’t have any symptoms. Studies have tested the Stockhom3 on large a number of men without symptoms, and it performs well. However, you must be eligible. You are eligible for the Stockholm3 if you are:
- A man aged 45–74
- Without a previous prostate cancer diagnosis
The test involves a simple blood draw at our clinic. Your GP will review your personalised risk score and discuss recommended next steps.
What if my risk is high?
The GP you saw will make a personalised recommendation. We can refer for MRI scanning, advise on regular PSA testing, or we may choose to refer you to a specialist. We can refer either privately on on the NHS, whose services accept our cancer referrals directly if their criteria are met.
How to arrange your Stockholm3 Test at Wessex Private GP
Please book a prostate health review. This 30-minute health check costs £185. At it, your doctor will take a detailed, prostate focused history, perform an examination and offer the Stockholm3 if you’re eligible.
If you’re eligible and interested, we will send your blood to our lab, who will first check your PSA, and then perform the Stockhom3 on the same sample if your PSA is greater than 1.5. However, if your PSA is less than 1.5, then the Stockholm3 is not required as your risk is low. If the Stockhom3 is done, we will charge you an additional £395. Only one blood draw is required for this process, which we perform at your prostate health review.
